The player controls character through amaze,eating dots (also called biscuits or just dots). When all dotsareeaten, player is taken to the next stage. Between some stages,oneof three intermission animations plays. Four enemies(Blinky,Pinky, Inky and Clyde) roam the maze, trying to catchplayer. If anenemy touches player, he loses a life. Whenever playeroccupies thesame tile as an enemy, he is considered to havecollided with thatghost. When all lives have been lost, the gameends. Player isawarded a single bonus life at 1,000 points bydefault—DIP switchesinside the machine can change the requiredpoints or disable thebonus life altogether.Near the corners of the maze are four larger, flashing dotsknownas power pellets that provide player with the temporaryability toeat the enemies. The enemies turn deep blue, reversedirection andusually move more slowly. When an enemy is eaten, itseyes remainand return to the center box where it is regenerated inits normalcolor. Blue enemies flash white to signal that they areabout tobecome dangerous again and the length of time for whichthe enemiesremain vulnerable varies from one stage to the next,generallybecoming shorter as the game progresses. In later stages,theenemies go straight to flashing, bypassing blue, which meansthatthey can only be eaten for a short amount of time, althoughtheystill reverse direction when a power pellet is eaten; in evenlaterstages, the ghosts do not become edible (i.e., they do notchangecolor and still make player lose a life on contact), butthey stillreverse direction.
